Unlicensed Band & Frequency Allocations

The FCC has allocated several bands and sets of frequencies for unlicensed use. There are some restrictions to the use of these bands

Family Radio Service (FRS)

FRS are a fairly new frequency allocation, the radios are restricted to half a watt with fixed antennas. These frequencies are not to be used with a repeater and only use standard PL privacy Tones.

These frequencies may only be used for voice communications.

Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS)

These are for private two way short-distance voice, data, or image communications for personal or business use.

Maximum of two watts, no antenna restrictions and no license required.

V-Link

Another "personal" radio system marketed at kids.

The Vlink Personal Voice-Link System is a walkie talkie for kids. They can record up to up to 20 seconds of voice mail messages and have user programmable "personal phone numbers" that can be used for individual addressing. Has an estimated range of up to 3 city blocks (if your lucky).

These are for general unlicensed use.
